In Reception and year 1, we encourage learning through exploration and questioning. We like to keep learning as practical and engaging as possible to ensure all children develop a sense of curiosity and a love of learning something new. We like to capture lots of our learning through photographs and these are shared with parents on Dojo. In Reception and Year 1, we like to use kind words to our friends and focus lots on how we can be ready, respectful and safe in all areas of our school.
Our topic for this term is The Spirit of Christmas.
Our books this term are: The Leaf Thief, Owl Babies and Stickman.
Homework:
Your child will be given a phonics book which will be tailored to their stage in reading. We ask that children read 5 times a week and record this in their reading records. They will also bring home a pencil case with sounds and tricky words to practice daily.
Phonics / reading :
We are a Little Wandle Letters and Sounds school. Children will receive daily phonics sessions and 3 reading sessions with an adult each week. Your child may also receive 'daily keep up' sessions if they require additional support.

Maths:
In reception the children learn to subitise and count numbers to 10 and then in year 1 this is developed to numbers to 100. In year 1, they also begin to count in 10s, 2s and 5s.
In reception, numbers to 10 are explored in depth to see how each number can be represented in different ways. We learn how to partition, add and subtract numbers. There is a greater emphasis on recording this formally in year 1.
Lots of different manipulatives are used to help them understand new concepts in maths and ensure that they are able to problem solve as well as complete arithmetic-style questions.
We explore positional language as well as learn about simple 2D and 3D shapes. We practically investigate the ideas around measurements including weight, height, capacity and time.
PE Days:
Our PE day is on Friday. Please ensure your child wears their PE kit to school on that day.
A reminder or our PE uniform policy:
Please label all clothing with your child's name. The PE kit consists of:
- A house-coloured t-shirt (with or without a logo).
- Black shorts.
- A dark tracksuit in winter.
- Daps or trainers.
Lost property will be available in the parent's room should any missing uniform items be recovered. Please ensure all uniform is labelled.

The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
